Pregnancy Old Wives Tales (Malay & Filipino's)

If you are born Asian, old wives tales are almost like bread and butter to almost everything thing in life especially if you are born in the years 80's and below. Sadly, old wives tales are becoming more taboo now. As for me, yes, some of them can sound and are silly but a few do make sense and does help especially while pregnant.

I am going through both Malay and Filipino's pregnancy old wives tales in one post. Even I had only visited Jhon's family once while pregnant for a week, believe me, they had made sure I followed some of their old wives tales too.

Not surprisingly, there are a few similarities in Malay and Filipino's pregnancy old wive's tales because being Asian, cultures sometimes do not stray very far. I am not going to cover standard beliefs like having a proper diet and having a healthy lifestyle like not smoking, drinking alcohol or encouraging exercise because if you really think about it, it's rather similar to an encouraged healthy diet anyways just with added precautions. (fear of salmonella, heart burn and such)

Hurting any animals for no practical reasons and your child will be deformed. (If you fish for leisure, your child might have a cleft palate)

Do not mock or mean to people whether they deserve it or not, especially if the person is of a special needs person or your child might receive the same flaws. (If you even joke about a friend about how dark their skin is, your child might have that same skin color)

Do no eat pineapples (prickly) or durian (heaty) fruits as it's not good for the baby.

Drinking coconut juice during early pregnancy may lead to miscarriage but encourage at the last trimester to have a "clean" and fair baby.

Looking or going out during an eclipse will develop a birthmark on the baby.

Must always satisfy pregnant wife's cravings or baby will have a drooling problem (excessive drool).

Pregnant wife is not allowed to carry heavy items as it will put too much pressure on uterus.

If you eat twin foods (twin bananas or twin egg yolks), you can have twins.

Breech babies are believed can be healers when taught and have great intuition.

Additional under Filipino's beliefs'

Drinking too much cold drinks will lead to a big baby.

Do not wear necklace or umbilical cord might wrap around baby's neck.

Pregnant women shouldn't share their food or drinks because their symptoms will be transferred to that person.

Whether you believe it or not, I think everyone should take it with a pinch of salt as a precaution. Honestly, I have seen some of the old wives' tales come true especially in hurting the animals and mocking others. For me, as long as it won't harm anything or anyone, I don't see a problem following suit.

With that said, I am grateful because as much as traditional Mak can be, she is actually quite lenient when it comes to these things. Under her wing, I can eat anything I want (except for pineapples or durians but if I crave for it, a bite won't hurt), I can do anything I want but I just need to be extra careful with the words I say. You know, even a funny sarcastic remark should be watchful of and such. In general, just do good deeds like sharing and caring and the baby will 'follow'.

For my 1 week pregnant stay with Jhon's parents in the Philippines, I wouldn't say it's torturous but it can be challenging but I just followed because I only had to deal it for a while right? haha They are more strict in such things. Every time Jhon help finished my meal (couldn't finish due to low/no appetite), they would always comment how he now will get my symptoms. When Jayden kept drinking from my water bottle and sucked my lollipop (he unbashfully grabbed it out of my hands lol), I had to pour the first water splash for his bath before I left for Singapore to 'cancel' out the symptoms.

Jayden was clingy with me at that time and wanted to be with me all the time. He would want to sit close and sit on my lap all the time. Jhon's family totally opposed to it even though I was comfortably sitting and not literally carrying him. Basically, there were plenty of things I had to watch out and not do. Like I said, I wasn't complaining because it IS their beliefs and I just respecting them. All I can say was I was just grateful we stayed for a while because I don't think I can tolerate it for 9 months and God knows what else I need to watch out after birth.

So like I said, following such pregnancy old wives tales can be challenging and annoying especially when you care already dealing with morning sickness and such. BUT there's nothing wrong taking it with a pinch of salt.

I'm pretty sure I probably missed out several pregnancy old wives tales so feel free to share for funsies!

Mini Room Make-over

I didn't take any before and after photos of our room but trust me when I said we did painted and re-arranged our room, okay? haha To be honest, it's not worth a show because it was a basic look - nothing close to Pinterest worthy - but it was all we needed.

Our room which used to be washed out (due to humidity) teal with a light and dark gray is now just plain off-white purple. We did considered making an effort in colors and design but it was a few days before Ramadhan and being 6 months pregnant, I knew I wouldn't be of much help.

As for the furniture arrangements, this was the rough concept, according to scale you know? haha

I know, very 'semangat' because with a small room which not much man power, I rather not have Jhon move the furniture back and forth trying to ensure the right placement. We haven't receive our baby crib yet because I arranged them to come end of July and we still haven't buy a mini drawer or cabinet for baby clothes.

Obviously, Jhon ended up doing most of the hard work. Don't get me wrong, I do help but I was at the stage where I get tired way too easily so I had thousands of breaks. We ended up finishing up after 1.5 days which was very long in my opinion.

But the deed was done! Our room is properly arranged and even had Hari Raya curtains up early. haha It's good to know that 1 big chore has been done. But guess what, despite taking plenty of rests, I got really sick.... again.

You will read more in the #BabyTalk series but it's been more than 2 weeks and I'm still coughing. On top of the sweltering heat, belly discomforts, I am so over it!

Errands Overseas

I wish I could follow but it wouldn't be financially practical.

Jhon will be home in Pasig until next Sunday to find a Barong, apply for the Marital Status in Philippines, a visit to the dentist and of course spending bonding time with his family, especially little Jayden.

Photos he shared as soon as he settled down.
Is this boy super round or what?

I guess this would be the last single trip he will be making because the next time he visit, I will be tagging along. Yey for confirmed yearly holidays.

The Singapore Haze Craze

Anyone who is affected by the Indonesian haze, please sit down. Not stand up because you are probably suffering from it and need to rest. Geddit? Geddit? sigh.

Every year, man and it seems to get worse too.

Indonesia, Y U do dis?

I stay indoors most of the time and I still get affected. Feeding the (feral) cats was 'interesting' too. I was glad we wore masks on the night this picture was taken because from 8pm, the PSI was at 223 and above!

Unfortunately, the mask didn't worked (I should've worn the N95 mask. I didn't because was not not that hazy at first) because as soon as I got home and after my shower, I got the sniffles. Speaking of which, have any of you used toner to clean your face? I only went out for 1-2 hours and my cotton pad was dirty!

The next whole day, I had constant runny nose and later, cough.

As I am typing this, my flu is gone but I got my whopping coughs again; back with a vengeance. Luckily, the constant heavy rains for the past few days helped tone down the haze.

Whether the rain was an act of God/ nature or act of Science (rumors of cloud seeding), I am still grateful. Now, I just need to get rid of my coughs.

Pizza, Chicken Wrap, Errand Travel and stuffs

Hello! This is just a random post for fun. What have you guys been doing lately?
I have been busy in a good way with blogging, wedding planning and doing fun stuff in between to balance it all.

Jhon has pampering me with all kinds of food lately. I told him he just bought a ticket of taking the blame of my weight gain. I really need to start exercising because my fitness is down the drain since I stopped since fasting month.

Jhon recently booked a flight to go back to Philippines for wedding errands purposes. The 2 main purposes are for him to get his proof of single status document and buy a barong tagalog. I wish I could follow especially to choose his barong tagalog but budget!

I just have to trust his fashion taste and keep sharing photos of barong tagalog styles I like and dislike to him.

Before I end, I just want to share our homemade chicken wrap. It was all Mak's idea but she bought some of the ingredients and expected us to conjure something delicious. Luckily. we had enough ingredients to make it yummy.

It was all tortilla wrap, lettuce, sliced jumbo chicken hotdogs, shredded grilled chicken, tomatoes with mayonnaise and chili sauce. I attempted a video style making the wrap but it was somewhat crappy. booo...

 Before it was wrapped.

I had to wrap it with a tissue like a baby so it won't unravel.
Sedap gila! *angkat bakul sendiri*

I recently bought some samples for fun from the Sample Store. It was just a face mask, Cure aqua gel and sunblock but because I checked out $5.99 they gave a box filled of other stuff. hehe I think got to do with their SG50 promotion.

What I ordered,

What I got.

What I am really looking forward to try is Argon oil from Essentials. I have been using coconut oil to moisturize my hair and always wanted to try Argon oil but there are too expensive. Let's see if it's really worth the money.

He's Back!

As expected, 9 days came and gone and now my other half is back and I am complete again. hehehe

His chipped tooth was removed but due to time constraints, he can't get his teeth fixed so he has to do it in Singapore. So for the mean time, senyum manis.... =P

Jhon didn't bring his ez-link card so had to use the standard ticket. I very the suaku and the card looks cute.

I also managed to satisfy my craving of the Chicken Salad at Istanbul Gourmet.

After the late lunch, I followed Jhon home to keep his luggage and we walked back to my place to pass me clothes he bought for me and my nephews. Mean while, selfie time! It's so unlike me but the new handphone and feeling physically good about myself helps. =p

I look like a bug eyed chipmunk but that's how I look so... accept aje lah.

Leaving (not) on a Jetplane

I've just sent Jhon away this morning at the airport for his yearly 'balik kampung' trip. I did not follow this time because 'tengah nak save duit nak kahwin lah'. Especially Jhon had to visit his dentist there to fix his broken tooth (that's why he does not show his teeth when he smiles in photos lately), he will be spending a lot in this trip.

I am jealous because his sister just gave birth to a a very cute baby boy and EVERYONE said little Jayden looked like Jhon as a baby. I wanna see in real life!

I also can't wait to see official baby photos taken by Jhon while he is there.
OUR future baby suppose to look like this ah... Not more China genes please. I want Spanish genes pulak. lol

Anyways, Jhon will be away for 9 days which is the shortest trip there. Mostly because he didn't make full use of the Chinese New Year holidays like he usually does and leave 'pun kena' save for wedding. =P

Meantime, this is what I will do until he comes back.

lol Okay, maybe not so miserable to a point I am just staring out the drain window but definitely staying indoors and do couch potato things.

Taking A Break...

... from wedding stuff and posts.

Sometimes when dealing on such big pivotal points of your life, you just need to take a breather and take a chill pill.

Over the Chinese New Year holidays, we took the opportunity of doing something we hardly ever do anymore. Take long walks. When we worked under the same building, at least once a week, we would walk from Changi Business Park all the way home to Kaki Bukit. It was a stress reliever, one on one quality time and also exercise on the side.

So it was nice after so long, we took the time to walk in the morning from my place to Bedok Reservoir.

We walked/ jogged 1 whole round the reservoir and although the sun was shining, it was not really that hot.

After a hearty breakfast, we headed home and saw one of the stray cats we fed. This is catdog because it's a cat but size of a medium sized dog. Sometimes I use her as a feet cushion because she is THAT big and my feet size is ugly stepsister size eh. hehe

Anyways, it felt so good just to walk and talk.
I felt so refreshed and my mind reset.

Yellow Man-Faced Stink Bug in Singapore

I never thought I would ever see a man-faced stink bug in my life. Only because I only knew of them through the internet and didn't thought there was any in Singapore. Ignorance. hehe

Until 1 night, Jhon and I were under the block, exiting the lift lobby to do our cat duties and a yellow thingy caught my eye. Initially, I thought it was a little yellow toy car until further inspection, It was a very cool bug. I am scared of bugs so usually I kept my distance while Jhon took a picture. It was 1 inch big and was just chilling in the middle of the area.

I did not recognized the bug because I was trying to keep my cool as I kept asking Jhon if this bug could fly. I don't want it to suddenly fly to my face, ya know? Jhon told me, no. After 1-2 minutes, the bug FLEW!!! Luckily, to the opposite direction.

Later on, Jhon sent me the photo and that's when it hit me as I saw it. The face on the back.

I guess knowing the bug was no where near me and able to think rationally, that's when it clicked me. I was so excited for reasons I think no one can relate to. lol All these while, I called it samurai faced bug.

It was also then I realized it was a stink bug and I was so glad we didn't get stunk.

Photo was shared on my Instagram. Follow me if you haven't at www.instagram.com/zzanyy

Government Say I Old Liao

2 weeks before my 30th birthday, I received a letter from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority. The letter where the government officially says that I don't look as young as my NIRC anymore.

2 months later after much digress and forgetfulness, I finally had a recent photo ID taken to submit. I hope they accept my application because by right, I am supposed to post within 1 month. Kwang kwang kwang...

I took my photo at FotoHub at Changi City Point and it was a breeze. I don't know, I kinda dislike taking photo IDs. I guess I had bad experiences especially during my younger years. I can remember the auntie asking me to smile but then said my eyes were too small so I had to "open" them.

Racist much, auntie?

And when I attempted to "open" my eyes, she would asked me to smile bigger and when I smiled bigger, she asked me to "open" my eyes and the cycle goes on and on until I got cranky and sometimes sweaty. In the end, my photos always looked solemn and emotionless.

Cue primary school bus pass.

Kesian kan? haha So my collection of photo IDs from young to old seems to be emotionless to happiness.

Officially Getting Older?

I know I've just turned 30 last month but age never made me feel old. I've always believed if I am active, be playful and at least manage to catch up with my nephews, I am youthful.

Until last Friday.

I was playing catch with a ball with Syihab. Irfan wanted to play too but Syihab didn't want to share his ball so I had to catch 2 different balls. I was fine until 2 balls were thrown towards me and I missed them. It both rolled between my legs and as I bent over, I felt 2 snaps on my lower back.
I could tell it was 2 veins being twisted and I had difficulty bending over.

This seems to be a boring back pain story but this is the first time I hurt my lower back besides menstrual related back pains. O_O

I stretched my back every now and again to ease the pain and it worked. After 3 days, I was feeling better but I was caught in a situation when I can't rest properly, the back pain came with a vengeance.

5 days later, pain has subsided but I still need to watch how I move. Urgh! It sucks. I hope my back will heal soon and that I won't have back problems like old people. hur hur hur! It sucks not being able to be energetic.

End of boring story.

Okay, to make it interesting, here's a picture of Syihab mocking Omah with her back pain last year.

The Chaotic Morning

As mentioned in my previous post, Jhon was leaving for Philippines and that day was today. His flight was about 6+am so basically he had to leave for the airport about 4+am. Technically, it was way too early but someone at the tour agency had to changed his time from 10pm to 6am for don't know what reason.

Jhon's plan was to stay awake until departure time.

Well, guess what? Worst case scenario happened. He overslept 3 alarms (which I made him set) and woke up at 5+am. Along with the help of his roommate, Rommel, he frantically got ready, took a chance and rode away to the airport.

For the first time, Jhon missed his flight.

I could only imagine his stress. While all this is happening, what was I doing? Snoozing away. I must declare that I always help and send Jhon to the airport except when flight times are too late or too early. It is because Mr Jhon Tolentino here would get worried about my well being. "Sayang..katakan.."

I initially wanted to date him out until wee morning but I worry I might tire him out and he worry about tiring ME out... sighs.. I tell ya, we worry too much for each other that sometimes it's annoying.

Anyways, since Jhon had bought his tickets through an agency and the fact that it was under promotion, he can't re-book which would be convenient. He tried to buy a ticket via HP and internet connection was weak. In the end, he took a cab home and headed all the way to Lucky Plaza to get another ticket.

Fast forward to 9am, I woke up and was shocked. I didn't got mad or anything because the damage was done. I just told Jhon not to tell me the total damage cost. O_o

His new flight time was 4.30pm which meant I got to send him away.
This was taken at Abg Jamil/Jhon's home.

I just wanted to show off my LSP socks.

And my Marceline shirt.
I have 4 more merchandise bought by Jhon the night before but I will share them some other time.

Since Rommel was home too, he also helped Jhon with a box of computer casing and since Jhon handled the luggage, I yet again stood around like a pole. It's nice to be around helpful gentlemen but I tell ya, it feel awkward when I can't help too or it's just me? I think many people would take advantage on this. lol

Anyways, Jhon checked in on time so we spent the last hour sitting around and had lunch/dinner.

I am going to miss Jhon extra this time because he has been constantly pampering me more than ever. haha I tell you, I am never the clingy, needy girlfriend but now, I can officially say that this man has soften this heart of stone. So Jhon, whenever I am needy or whatever it's your fault ah... lol

Mahal Kita!

Meantime, you try to gain more weight and I try to lose weight my flabs.

Dirty Keyboard

Hi! Just inserting a somewhat random post.

The other day, Jhon's keyboard was glitching on him. The only solution at that point was to buy a new keyboard but he had spent so much on his new DIY computer that it's going to burst his budget. It sucked but it seemed that  we had no choice at all.

Until I remembered I had an unused keyboard that was covered under a 'beautiful' grey blanket of dust. I had a computer 6 years ago until it died on me. Jhon bought me a laptop and ever since, I have not been using the keyboard. It was stored in the keyboard drawer of my computer desk.

Anyways, I offered my old keyboard which I remembered was in perfect condition but he said no without skipping a beat after mentioned the grey blanket. -_-

So I decided to meticulously clean for him and gave it as a surprise.

Okay, I am the female version of The Adventure Time character, Demon Cat in the episode Dungeon. Don't get what I mean? Read this.

So basically, I know how to clean a keyboard. I clean my keyboard almost every week at work and my laptop even has a rubber cover thingy. But to clean a keyboard that was fully covered with dust is another thing.

I started with just dusting off the top layer and then with a keyboard cleaner, I used cotton buds to clean every nook and cranny. That is when I saw the problem. Thick layer of dust under the keys. It was obvious that I had to remove the keys and I knew about thanks to jokes like these.

I was scared lah at first. What if I happly peel off the keys and 'sekali' cannot put back how?

So I practiced with one of the uncommonly used keys which was the Page up and Page down keys. lol It worked so I removed the keys group by group and behold the dust blanket!

Frankly speaking, I didn't intend cleaning my keyboard to turn into a blog post so I just had 1 photo throughout the process. I only took that photo just to show to Jhon when I gave him the keyboard so he could appreciate my hardwork. lol

But trust me, I cleaned the keyboard until it looked brand new, wor!

The next time was to actually check if the keyboard actually works. hahaha Thank God, it did. Weee!

Abrupt End.
